Systems Society of India (SSI) is a 'professional body' of distinguished Engineers and Scientists from Engineering, Science, Social Studies & Arts disciplines. It promotes advancement of theory, research, application & practice keeping in view the holistic systems approach for the advancement of humankind.

In systems science, systems theory is an interdisciplinary theory about the nature of complex systems in nature, society and science, and is a framework by which one can investigate and/or describe any group of objects that work together to produce some result. This could be a single organism, any organization or society, or any electro-mechanical or informational artifact. Systems theory first originated in biology in the 1920s out of the need to explain the interrelatedness of organisms in ecosystems. As a technical and general academic area of study it predominantly refers to the science of systems that resulted from Bertalanffy’s General Systems Theory (GST), among others, in initiating what became a project of systems research and practice.

Von Bertalanffy's objective was to bring together under one heading the organismic science that he had observed in his work as a biologist. His desire was to use the word "system" to describe those principles which are common to systems in general.

In GST, Von Bertalanffy writes:

...there exist models, principles, and laws that apply to generalized systems or their subclasses, irrespective of their particular kind, the nature of their component elements, and the relationships or "forces" between them. It seems legitimate to ask for a theory, not of systems of a more or less special kind, but of universal principles applying to systems in general.
